We have sought out plant varieties that provide low maintenance, use little or no water once established, and are simply hardy enough to grow where others don't. We grow and ship our plants in 5" or quart-size (in certain varieties) plastic containers. Knowing that the root system is the most important part of the plant we guarantee. our plants to have a large root system that fills the container. CHP is a small family operation! We propagate, pot, water, prune, and personally package the pants you order from us. Most of our plants are grown from cuttings taken from the plants or seeds collected nearby the nursery at an elevation of 6300 ft. Our weather is extreme with temps below 0 are common in the winter and intense sunlight all summer long. We don't grow plants in heated greenhouses, they have to be able to survive the elements! Please note that deciduous plants ordered in the winter months and early spring will have been pruned a minimum of 30% compared to photos and may have no leaves Our nursery is also licensed and inspected by the Colorado Department of Agriculture, Nursery Division and holds a current Japanese Beetle Certificate. You'll note in our feedback that our shipping process is a sight to behold. We love our customers so please don't hesitate to reach out.

  • Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) is a leafy deciduous perennial that grows as a woody hedge or a single-stemmed small tree. Most gardeners love it for its quick growth, attractive white flowers, and its strong, sweet and almond-like aroma fragrance.
  • Chokecherries will reach a height of 20 to 30 ft; Width 15 to 20 ft if provided full sun or part shade and average, well-drained soils. This shrub/tree prefers zones 3-7 riparian zones. In the wild, It occurs most commonly in canyon bottoms and northern aspects at 6-8’000 feet but has been seen in areas as low as 5,000 feet and in dryer soils that receive summer watering. It is a popular shrub because it can be transplanted and adapted to many types of yards.
  • In its native habitat it grows in dense thickets or large clusters which makes it a perfect plant for gardeners who are looking to create a shrubby border, windbreak, noise barrier, or erosion control. In fact, this plant is commonly used by reclamation groups for things like streambed stabilization or fire-burned reclamation.
  • However, it is much more than a reclamation workhorse, it is also beloved by many birds and other wildlife. It provides food, cover and nesting habitat for a variety of birds. Birds also take advantage of its growth form for cover and nesting habitat. Additionally, It is used by deer, bear, and rabbits as a browse source in both summer and winter. Honey bees and butterflies enjoy its very aromatic flowers as a source of nectar in the spring.
  • The common name, chokecherry, came from the bitter and astringent taste of the fruit. Pioneers and settlers came to realize its food value. Mature fruits are still collected today and used to make jellies, jams, pie fillings, syrups, sauces, and wines. Its berries are so prevalent that in 2007, it was named North Dakota’s official fruit.
